Nutrition Expert highlights connection between food and patient Health

July 05, 2018

Catherine Macpherson, registered dietitian nutritionist and chief nutrition officer at Mom’s Meals NourishCare, the nation’s leading provider of home-delivered meals for older adults, people recently hospitalized, and people with chronic conditions, will be a panelist speaking on “Identifying New Opportunities to Engage, Educate, and Retain Members: Leveraging Creative Strategies to Promote Healthy Behaviors and Drive Member Satisfaction,” at the 9th Annual Medicare Market Innovations on July 10, 2018 in San Diego.

In her role on the panel, Macpherson will highlight how Medicare plans can help improve patient outcomes and lower plan costs through providing a benefit consisting of a variety of nutritionally-complete and condition-specific meals delivered to the homes of its members. The uniquely tailored meals support patient recovery after hospitalization and reduce instances of readmission, as well as help patients manage chronic conditions, avoid hospitalizations, and preserve health and independence.

“In the Medicare community, the ability to provide new benefits targeted to members with chronic conditions is currently the hot topic,” said Macpherson. “We are seeing an exciting connection between the personal needs of the member and the benefit package provided by the health plan. Plans are now designing unique benefit packages that are very appealing to consumers who are looking for support managing chronic conditions.”

The annual conference draws marketing and product experts from Medicare health plans across the country to discuss new ideas and collaborate on opportunities to attract, retain and engage Medicare consumers.

“One essential component of these emerging benefit packages is nutrition,” continued Macpherson. “Eating guidelines for those with conditions including diabetes, heart failure, renal disease and others, can be challenging to understand and follow, particularly when people face barriers that could be related to financial status, education, language, transportation, food preparation skills and access to healthy sources of food. These social determinants of health, as well as the medical needs of people with chronic conditions, can be addressed by a home-delivered meals program.”

Linda L.Roman, MBA, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Human Arc, will moderate the panel and Macpherson's co-panelists include:

  • Archie Dey, Director, Consumer Insights, SCAN Health Plan
  • Jennifer Harper, Director of Medicare Sales, Retention and Retail Operations, VIVA Health, Inc.
  • Merry Beth Ward, Vice President, Healthcare Strategy, SourceLink

Macpherson is an expert in product management, behavior change, weight management, tobacco cessation, medication adherence, health coaching, disease management and culinary arts. She is the nutrition expert for Mom’s Meals NourishCare and leads the company’s product strategy and development team.
